Animatic

Version 1

This version shows the memories in full bright colour. This I thought, would appear more articulate as it shows he is most brightest when with his love. When he is alone it is dull and bleek.

Version 2

This version shows the memories as 'half greyscale' to show the deterioration of the memory over time. The moment in the present is in a brighter colour to show that the moment in time is real.

Digi-pak Ideas

We created drafts of our individual ideas in our early part of the project. We are now starting to look at what we could use for the final product.

We all liked the idea of the note book, with the song tracks written on paper. This shows a clear convention of a singer/songwriter and would appeal to the audience clearly so they understand what the music will be like.

We also felt that having an image of the artist on the front was very conventional with this type of genre. Our photograph will include Mike (the actor playing Chase Coy in the music video) as this sends a message to the audience showing who's music it is. We also feel that being a male young adult he could entice young females into the music by using his looks.

Lesson Work

We have been working on our storyboards for our lesson time. We hope to create a detailed storyboard to look more professional. After we have finished storyboarding our idea we will create an animatic so we can see how it will piece together.

In the storyboard we hope to encorperate different camera shots and camera movements to make the video look more like a real music video.

We are using a performance and a narrative based idea which intertwines throughout the music video.

Singer-Songwriters BBC4

While settling down to friday night TV I found myself coming across BBC4 playing 'singer-songwriters at the BBC'. I looked into it and found that it is a series they are running for a couple of weeks. They are running the series for 4 episodes.

The show features a compilation of singer-songwriters performing from archive footage from programmes such as: Old Grey Whistle Test, In Concert, Top of the Pops, Sounds for Saturday, the Bobby Gentry Show and One in Ten.

Effects Test

Focus Pull

We tested the camera we want to use to see how good/clear the focus pull would be. We will be using this in our music video to change the importance of different mise en scene.

The camera is very good and shows smooth focus pull, it will be clear to the audience that it is a focus pull. This was done using the Canon 550D and we will be using this for both the filming and the photoshoot for the ancillary tasks.

David Bailey

David Bailey is a well-known English fashion photographer. As well as a fashion photographer, David Bailey has also been responsible for record album sleeve art for performers including The Rolling Stones and Marianne Faithful.

Bailey has worked with various musicians over the time from The Beatles to Oasis and Dizzee Rascal.

Although we want to use a different stlye of photography we take David Bailey as inspiration as he is known for the work he does with musicians. If this were in the 'real world', and we had this promotional campaigne, we would certainly look to David Bailey for photography work as this would help promote the artist and the album.

Props

For our music video we will be using various props to get the narrative message across to the audience. The props also help with the mise en scene. We will need an acoustic guitar as they are used in songwriting. The song also features an acoustic guitar so it would be wrong to not include one.

We will use the prospectus to show the audience how and why the couple are going their seperate ways, but will still keep the relationship going.

The boxes will be shown at the start to signify straight away that they are leaving. This prop will be key to letting the audience know that the artist is moving away.

Storyboard Ideas

For the start of the song there is an instrumental part. We want to express this by having a Guitar playing on it's own.
This is a 'confused.com advert' and this shows what we want to do. We are going to frame the scene differently though as to make it easier for us to make it seem the guitar is playing itself.

Pitch And Feedback

Last week Friday, we pitched our ideas and research to the teacher and other groups. The [ith went well and we received feedbacks from the groups and teacher. Majority of the feedbacks were positive with few suggestion on improvement. One insue that was most refered by the group was the odering of post on our blog. We have seen into the issue and re-orderd the posts so that it is easier to understand the developement of our research and proogrress of our work. Most people liked the way we potrayed our target audince, the use of test videos and diffenent variety in our presentation.
Below are the group feebacks from Friday on our pitch and blog. I intenteional edited them into scrap paper layouts just to give the blog that kind of "songwriting" feel to it.

Treatment

Story Idea:
A couple are going their seperate ways but they still want to keep their relationship going, we are using university as the reason. The singer (boy) visits various places of memories with his girlfriend and has flashbacks. When in the place on his own he is singing in black and white, It will then show a flashback of them together having fun. This will be in colour and a handi cam style of filming.

Locations:
We decided to go for the mundane idea as we agreed that it's the little things you miss and remember most. We will still include some scenic places as it's unavoidable.
Locations we hope to look at for the video:
♫ Beach
♫ Bus
♫ Park
♫ Mike's Lounge
♫ Bedrooms
♫ High street

Actors:
For the singer we have Mike Bell. He is one of our group members and is currently learning the song lyrics. We also have Mike's friend who will play the part of his girlfriend.

Effects Test

This is a test video of me trying out the effect where the video is slowed down but the vocals appear in sync still. The effect is very simple and easy to do but looks amazing when used correctly.

To do this effect you have to play the music and mime to the music at double speed. This way when the backing track is normal you can reduce the footage speed to half speed but your still in sync.

After trying it out now, before we start filming, we can deffinately use it as a possibility!

Location! Location! Location!

After going on a location shoot I thought about not only using scenic and conventional places for the music video but maybe mundane places too. This would challenge usually conventions of a singer/songwriter ballad. I thought about how its the little things we remember the most and how it would be more artistic to have mundane places that are special and memorable.

I made this small Prezi to show the different images and places we are looking at.

Audience Research

I interviewed a few people to see their instant opinions of the song we chose. I tried to interview people of different ages and different genders as music reaches out to a broad audience.

Although his main audience is female teenagers it show that his music reaches out to others as well. The majority liked the song and would buy it either as a single or on itunes.

I asked what their favourite band was to see if there was a correlation between the music they listen to normally, and this song. As music is so broad it was hard to put a link to it. The closest I could link with this song is that most of the other favourite artists/bands are lyrical and meaningful.

Chase Coy's Fanbase

So i did a few researches on Chase Coy's fanbase and found out that as most young male singer/song writers, he turns to have more female fans. Majority of his fans as suggested by his Myspace and facebook followers are female. Ranging from an average age of about 13 to 23. Not to say he has'nt got male fans which he has but it's predominantly female.

Screenshot showing myspace followers

From his live videos and blog, i will say Chase Coy doesnt come across as image concious , while promoting his songs . Although he has much charm and the good looks which apeal to that young female audince. He emphasises more on his message in the songs rather than the way his image is beign potrayed.

Fans Feedba
ck These are a few out of many fan comments on Coy's work taken from Facebook, Myspace and his official website. These will help us in developing or video ideas by knowing the fans preferances.

Digi-Pack idea

This is my idea for the Digi-pack, for the album, Picturesque by Chase Coy. It includes 13 songs, but in this design I included only 8, as all of the songs couldn't fit in with my design idea.

I included the Artist in the front cover of the Digi-Pack, as this is what most Digi-packs on the market, also include for upcoming artists. Bigger artists like 'Black Eye'd Peas' are well known enough to the public, that they are able to just include a graphic in some of their album covers.

Digipack ideas

I quicky created this on microsoft word with some images taken from google and using Paint to edit the pictures. it illustrastes what the album cover might look like. i wanted to potray the genre b keeping it natural and simple in design.

Digi-pak And Magazine Advert Ideas

An Example Of One Idea Of A Digi-pak/AdvertWe Could Use:

Magazine Advert Research

These are various magazine articles that we could find. They are promoting a band/artist and a up and coming album. As part of our ancillary task we will create an advert, that would be in a magazine, for our artists new album.

Proliferation of viral marketing means that magazines are used less often, this meant that it became hard to find such adverts for our research. NME has helped me look up these adverts as they are still a popular music magazine. This magazine shows popular and less popular music, so even though singer/songwriter is not as popular as other genres (such as Rock, R&B Pop) it would still be able to feature in this well known magazine.

I noticed alot of album adverts include the artist as they are recognizable to the audience. When we come to draft our magazine advert we will keep this in mind. We will also explore the idea of using conventional items for the advert as well.

Digi-pak Research

After looking at these various singer/songwriters Album covers and back covers we can get an idea of what other artists are doing. Using these we can gain inspiration for our own Digi-pak.

All of these include the artist on both the front and the back of the album and most of the time appear to not be looking at the camera. However, I like the idea of breaking the fourth wall and taking the audiences attention.

Inspiration

While coming up with an idea for our music video we thought how it's about leaving your home place behind and how you'd miss it all. We then got this idea of using old video clips or memories to show the things you'd miss. We like this idea of handi-cam as it gives a true effect of old videos and old times. Although we like this idea we also like the idea of using narrative and normal camera shots so the story comes across.
